Some Recent Reflections

When I was traveling in Europe I had a lot of time to think. I wasn’t working and I was on break from running. I thought a lot about my life….where I’m at and where I would like to be. Not as a runner but as a person.
Running can feel really selfish sometimes. I spend a lot of time and energy devoted to becoming a better athlete. It’s given me a lot in return through the friendships I’ve made and the amazing places I’ve seen. I would like to be able to give back more to create a better balance.
I love the Freihofers 5k for that reason. 2009 was my first time participating and I know it won’t be my last. It was definitely one of the highlights of my year. They have the elite runners go and talk to kids at schools about having a healthy lifestyle and all the benefits you get from being active and eating well. I went to an elementary school and a junior high and talked about what I’ve gotten out of running and how I’ve dealt with some of the struggles life has thrown my way. The kids really seemed to enjoy the talks and asked a ton of questions. It was great to not be so focused on just the race. I was relaxed and happy and ended up with a PR!
Next week I’m going to speak at a women’s running camp in Colorado and I hope I get more opportunities like this in the future. I realize that my impact may be very small but if I can help out one person it will be well worth it.
