Christmas Bingo

Tera MoodyI’m back in Colorado after spending time in Illinois for Christmas. Every year we drive down to my grandma’s house in “Amazing Arcola.” It’s a REALLY small town (they still have brick roads!) and a nice change of pace after a few days in Chicago. There isn’t much in the way of entertainment so everyone just sits around and eats, talks, and eats some more. Then on Christmas Eve the excitement begins! First we videotape everyone saying what their highlight of the year was (mine was running in the World Championships). Then my grandma gives everyone spoons with their initials carved in them and proof sets to the grandkids.

A few years ago we started playing bingo instead of getting gifts for each other and it’s been a huge hit. Everyone buys and wraps a bunch of presents. Some of them are gag gifts (think farting santa doll, jesus night light… this family has seen it all). Others are good gifts like restaurant gift cards and movies. You never know what you are going to get. And you don’t know if you are going to keep it either. When the next person gets bingo they have the option of stealing a present or getting a new one. Once a present is stolen for the 3rd time it becomes frozen.

Like always, this year provided plenty of laughs and a lot of fun. There were so many presents that we played for several hours. I scored a couple gift cards and an Arcola T-shirt. And I didn’t get stuck with the duck giblet jerky. All in all it was a great Christmas.
