Endurance Up, Weight Down!

I’m so thrilled with running lately! I’m down 5 lbs and I’ve started to challenge myself to push past points of weakness. The Couch to 5K program advises you to go at your own pace, so if you need to slow down or speed up, you should so what you feel works best. I’ve been running for longer intervals of time without a problem now and it feels great. At this rate, I’m positive I’ll have a great experience running the FWR, and that’s a really nice thing to feel since I’m just a beginner.

I asked my friend Kallie about her experiences switching from the treadmill to outside. She told me that it’ll certainly be new and a little challenging but once I get through the initial few times running outside, I’ll be fine. She told me she always feels like the treadmill pushes her since it’s a moving belt. I understand that. She gave me some great advice; remember that the pavement is a new surface, so don’t get discouraged. Just remember to keep your goal in mind, no matter how long the stretch of road in front of you seems. She’s so helpful!

My feet are starting to hurt less now that I’m fully used to my running shoes. I really love them… they’ve become my partners in crime for running (as silly as that sounds). I no longer feel self-conscious on the treadmill. I can’t believe that I even did in the first place! I reminded myself that everyone had to start somewhere, and I should be patting myself on the back for even getting where I am now. So… (pat, pat, pat).

    Sarah Good job! Another big difference between running the treadmill and running the Freihofer is the hills. The Freihofer starts out up a short steep one, and covers some moderate hills in Washington Park. When you have a good training base on the treadmill, you might consider making at least one day a week a “hill” day. Your treadmill might have a program built in which will imitate the feeling of running up hills by changing the elevation of your treadmill during your run. Of course, the nice thing about the Freihofer’s is you get to finish by running down that hill, to throngs of cheering people! Keep up the good work.
