Last week in one of my many trips to the local Costco I noticed a booth setup inside that was selling custom orthotics. While this wasn’t the first time I had seen such a booth, or a company making a similar claim, I was surprised with their claim of fixing foot problems in a matter of minutes and for a fraction of the price. So what makes a “custom” made orthotic from Costco different from one from a podiatrist’s office? To the untrained eye the differences may be undetectable.

Million Dollar Question: To stretch or not to stretch?

What sport can you think of that is growing at one of the fastest paces of any sport today? The answer may surprise you—running. According to Running USA, in 2010 alone, 59% of females and 41% of males ran a half marathon. That is a huge increase from the mid 80’s when the data was first collected. So what does it take to be considered a “runner”? I think if you asked people, the answer you got would be different and may surprise you. Some may say that you need to run a certain amount of miles per week, while other may say just a pair of running shoes and a lunch break. Both answers can be considered correct. If you have a running regimen that works for you then should consider that to be the best answer.

A Brief Chat With Alissa McKaig

Runner’s World profiles U.S. runner Alissa McKaig, who will be competing at Freihofer’s on June 4.

Alissa McKaig of North Carolina-based ZAP Fitness, who was a member of the U.S. bronze medal women’s team at the 2011 World Cross Country Championships, will do the Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K in Albany, New York on June 4 and will be part of the U.S. squad in the marathon at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea later this summer. “Life is too short and too unpredictable. I didn’t want to turn down a World team,” explains McKaig. “What if it never happens again? I might as well take the chance to represent my country.”

Ladies in the Training Challenge program, have you looked at the calendar? No, not to see that the Freihofer’s Run for Women, our big goal, is only three weeks away. How about to see how long you’ve been training? Seven full weeks! Almost two months! Maybe you don’t need to look at the calendar, because your legs and the rest of your body can tell you how long you’ve trained, or more importantly how far you’ve come.
